When you join a BOINC project your account will keep track of all hosts connected to it by keeping track of the hostname. Once Raspbian has been updated install the Xfce desktop environment. Before installing any Xfce make sure to update and upgrade the current packages. I do not setup my desktops to run on boot since I mostly remote into the pi’s but require to have a GUI occasionally. I chose Xfce since it is one of the lighter end desktop environments and requires no extra steps for running the Xserver. This will give 16 megabytes of memory to the GPU. Choose the Split Memory option and type in 16. To split the memory navigate to the Advanced Options option and click enter. This will tell the Raspberry Pi that there is a lot more space on the micro SD card than the few megabytes that it currently owns. To expand the filesystem choose the Expand Filesystem option. To do this run the following command: sudo raspi-config Raspbian Configurationīefore going any further we need to expand the filesystem and split the memory for the GPU. Why This Article?Īs previously stated I have had a couple Raspberry Pi 2’s laying around collecting dust and decided to put their processing power to good use. When the computation completes it is sent to the server and a new task is delivered. The end result is that while a person goes about their day using the computer computations will be performed in the background as long as the computer is powered on. The person can decide how much processing power and time to give to the project(s). The server will then register the computer the software is on, assign a Cross Project ID (cpid) and then send tasks to the computer, one for each core (so a four core processor will get four tasks). They then join a project (or multiple projects) by registering with an email address and password (one for each project). This is how it works: A person installs the BOINC software on the computer. These projects range from classifying galaxies to finding cures for diseases such as Malaria, Alzheimer’s and certain strains of cancer. BOINC allows a person to donate their idle processing power to scientific projects. While people use computers every day only a fraction of the total computing power is ever used, leaving large amounts of idle processor time. Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, Linux, or Android) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research.
